On Tuesday, the Excelsior Springs School District Professional Development Committee hosted the first district twitter chat using the #essd40pd hashtag. The conversation for this first discussion focused around being a connected educator. For a first time twitter chat, all went well and we were pleased with the participation of staff members across all grade levels and we even had some participants from outside the school district. As someone using twitter more and more each day, I would strongly encourage each of you to not only get involved with the district twitter chat that will take place each Tuesday at 4:30, but to search for other chats that you can experience as well.
Twitter chats are invaluable for a variety of reasons. First, they cost nothing. Second and more importantly, you can seek out topics that you are interested in that are relevant to you. If you are interested in learning more about 21st Century Education, there is a twitter chat each Sunday at 7:00 using the #21stedchat. Just as the Apple commercial told us that there was an app for that, if you are interested in a topic, there’s a “chat” for that. Another great benefit about twitter chats is that if you cannot participate at that particular time, you can always read what was discussed afterwards using the same hashtag. As mentioned above these chats are a risk free way of connecting with educators anywhere in the world to share and learn ideas and instructional practices.
On Tuesday, October 22, the next PDC twitter chat will take place again at 4:30 pm (CDT) with the topic being creativity and innovation in the classroom. Thanks to the members of our staff who participated in the chat and to the staff that took the time to read what was discussed afterwards. Have a great weekend and TURN UP THE HEAT!!!!
